Kai at 2 1/2

Kai is now fully grown....and a big girl, though skinny as all get out. She has fit into the household very well. She is the gentlest dog i've ever had. I'm also not sure i've had a dog as intelligent as her, after almost 2 weeks of trying to teach my other two dogs to go through the new "dog door"....Kai decided to help. She herself had some reservations about it but after the 4th or 5th day, was now flying through and loving she no longer had to ring the door bells. Noting my frustration with the other two, I was stunned to watch her teach my little Kabuki. Gently, and calmly, she showed Kabuki how to push the plastic flap and go through the door. If that wasn't enough, she then taught Kobi, my old girl. Today, they have taken her lead...and all run in and out "the flap", thanks to Kai! More on Kai later.

Kai is now 16 months old. She is still a beauty but looks very different. Her body is now silver and black (with some white) and her face remains black. She is a good girl but full of piss and vinegar. She has the energy of a lemming and drives my little one crazy sometimes with her chronic wanting to play. She had a rough go of things back in March, with a blockage and was hospitalized for 3-4 days but she's just fine now. She adores her sister Kabuki and is no longer so frightened of Kobi. Chulo (the grey) seems to be fine with her as well, even on the day she actually tried to climb in his cage, when he was in there! She truly is beautiful and a wonderful addition to this household. Now if I could just turn her into the perfect watch dog like my stoner was.....she just has no interest!

24 weeks and growing

Kai is 24 weeks now and growing like a weed. She's about 50 lbs and still has lots of her "puppy wiggle skin". She is getting along wonderfully with the other two K girls and no longer runs when they bark at something. She stands her ground now and watches!!! I suppose she should be going to puppy class but it had been postponed because my favorite trainer did not have any classes at the time. But we have since spoken about doing one on one, for the same cost and using her dogs as distractions. I'm thinking this will work, but one never knows. She's learning quickly and responds pretty well. I admit I'm not as strict with my dogs as I used to be and she's gotten a tad wild. I realize I have to stop that and get serious, but over all she really is a well behaved dog. I can leave her loose in the bedroom at night now, with little fear that she will get into something. And in fact, she rarely touches things that are not hers anymore. I have tested her loose in the house for very short burts of 10 to 15 minutes. Within the learning process, she has finally learned the bird is NOT her next meal and no longer stares longingly when Chulo flaps his wings! This is a great victory, despite my being loathe to test this when not in the room!

Kai to date

Kai has grown by leaps and bounds. She's also fitting into the household well. This week we had a serious tick bite that created a near dime size hole on her little face. Both she and I were not happy campers, well alright, I was not a happy camper. She just thought all the attention was wonderful. She's learning quickly....tasks that she's being trained for....and even those I am not specifically training for. She adores my Swedish Lapphund (the little black dog), but is quickly surpassing her in size and energy. She's a happy dog and enjoys her play. I've been able to leave her loose in the room at night (though I gate if off so she can't leave) and is thrilled she is no longer "trapped" in her crate. On the issue of the crate, she most often sleeps in the bedroom one and I have another in the living room that she can often be found napping in.

Week 21

Kai will be 21 weeks in 2 days. She continues to grow and change on a daily basis, with those changes come spurts of pure energy, followed by the lethargy that only a puppy experiences. She is quickly learning the things she needs to, though she is not doing so well with the lead chewing, despite repeated corrections. But that is part of being a pup isn't it now? The two newest pictures were taken this afternoon in the backyard, showing off her wonderful color transformation.
